What Are the Types and Applications of Coring Bits

The ancient Egyptians invented the core drill , which dates back to 3000 BC and is still in use today. In this article, Manufacturer HANGHUA will explain the two main types of coring and how they work, as well as the most common applications for each type of coring.

Types of coring

There are two main types of coring boreholes: hard coring and soft coring. This refers to the type of lithology to which each method applies. Soft coring is used for core samples of loose material and is capable of reaching depths of 500 feet.

Hard coring is used when the subsurface consists of material that is as hard or harder than sandstone. Greater depths can be achieved with this type of coring.

Working Principle

Soft coring uses a core punching system. This involves the use of two barrels, one nested inside the other. The inner barrel is pushed forward to capture the core sample and then the outer barrel is extended to provide casing, so the hole does not collapse. This method protects the integrity of the sample from the air or fluids used in advancing the outer barrel.

Hard coring also uses two nested barrels, but the outer barrel extends before the inner barrel. This means that the sample is flushed with drilling fluid or air, but because the core sample is competent rock, there is no risk of disturbance or contamination. Hard coring is sometimes referred to as diamond coring because small diamond embedded bits are used to cut through rock in difficult lithologies.

Applications

Coring (either soft or hard) is used when geological formations need to be viewed and defined.

Soft coring allows continuous coring through interbedded clay and sand. The samples generated highlight the different strata and the consultant can determine how deep a casing needs to be set to seal out contaminants and avoid potential cross-contamination.

Hard coring is used for environmental projects for very similar reasons - to identify fractures in the geology and to determine where/how contaminants may be dispersed in the subsurface. However, it can also be used for exploratory mining projects to determine how deep or in what direction they should drill for ores or minerals.

Diamond core drill bits

Coring is a technique that can be used when your project requires a clear definition of the geological formation.

Advantages of HANGHUA diamond impregnated core drill bits.

1. Extremely wide range of applications.

2. Can be used in variable or strip geological formations.

3. Their multi-layer tool arrangement allows for longer overall bit life than bits produced with other types of cutting media.

4. They are particularly suitable for drilling in hard, consolidated and non-abrasive formations.
